Johnny gave me a lift to Kirkstall yesterday to pick up the wee puddy cat.
When we got home I let him out of the box and he slunk off behind the sofa - where he resolutely remained despite mine and Johnny's attempts at enticing him out with his toy mouse.
Figured it'd be best to leave him to his own devices for a bit so me and Al watched last week's Dr Who - in retrospect Dr Who is probably not the best way of getting things out from behind a sofa :) so we decided to leave the living room and see if he went for an explore by himself. A couple of hours and various visits downstairs later and he was still behind the sofa. gave up and moved the sofa out and he slunk off to the kitchen in the cellar for a poke about there. an hour or so later I looked for him and he was sitting behind the washing machine. Al and I could stroke him from there and he didn't seem jumpy or anything so I left him for a bit longer. at about 1:30am I went down and managed to coax him out of his hiding place and after a few minutes of slinking around trying to find somewhere else to hide the finally started sniffing round me and letting me stroke him. yay. he walked over me a bit and even sat on my lap. phew! then he proceded to follow me round the kitchen meowing occasionally. excellent. I left him on a pillow in the kitchen and went to bed.
of course this morning he was hiding behind the chair in the bay window. pfft! cats! :)

and to complicate things my brain keeps calling him mango. it's not a bad name for a cat - there used to be another cat called mango on the street many years ago. I'm holding off giving him any name till he's been round for a while.

all this cat-related excitement made me completely forget that I had a financial adviser appointment with [livejournal.com profile] lindabird last night! arse! I felt really bad about dragging them over to hyde park for no reason :( rescheduled for friday and actually put in my phone's reminder section.

Dr Russel (who hyde parkites and former hyde parkites may be alarmed to hear has taken all the star trek stuff down from his office :( ) has arranged for me to get an x-ray of my back to check that the nerve spaces haven't become obstructed and given me co-codomol as it's more of a muscle relaxant than the other tablets I was on incase it's tendons that are causing the problem. gotta ring up in the morning to arrange the x-ray itself. thumb still resolutely numb.

Ma Woo's "Pudding" is a rescue cat and doesn't seem to like people very very much. Mum had had her about a 3 weeks when we went to visit. It took Pudding 4 days to come out of whereever she was hiding to come and say hello and deign for us to stroke her. This was a massive improvement because when we first arrived she kept running away and couldn't even be in the same room as us. Apparently she's loads better now and even said hello to the builders that were there last week!

As you say, they just need a bit of time to settle.

you do realise that you should be cautious about refering to ma woo's pudding

:D

ahhh, I thought referring to ma Woo's pussy would be even more disturbing though (and a bit too much "Are you being served") : )

I concur. It's perfectly normal cat behaviour* and nothing to worry about. He'll be strutting his stuff in no time.

* not that I would know, my cat came out of the carry case as bold as you like, surveyed the perimeter of the front room and then looked at me with a "well, I suppose this will do" look on her face.

all the cats I've previously had have been kittens and therefore pretty oblivious to anything other than wanting to play or sleep on your head. I'm glad it sounds pretty standard. as I said he doesn't actually seem that jumpy - just cautious.

Hope he settles in soon, my bestest & now most friendly cat spent the first four days behind a sofa when we got him, silly wussy beast! Has decided living with me not too insufferable now though :)

Cat nip might make him more playful :)

If he knows his name already you'll probably be able to get away with Mango as it's only a slight variation & he prob wont be able to tell the difference.

indeed - current photos would be of the top of his head or his tail. hopefully he'll be a little more social tonight.
he's a very pretty cat - he has the head shape of a burmese - with little apple cheeks.

:)

Mango. Yes. Dooo eeet.

(I read it as Mango earlier, and thought it suited your naming-convention)

What do you mean Dr Russell has taken down his science fiction stuff? Damn it, the only enjoyable bit of going to the Drs now gone. *sob*

mango is a perfectly respectable name for a cat, especially if he is ginger.
mungo reminds me of a character not unlike ludo from Labyrinth, but I'll be damned if I can remember what my brain is actually on about here...

Wow - you've got a lot of friends! :P

As Stephen said, Izzy stayed behind the sofa for AGES when she moved in with him - that could be coz he's a boy and therefore smells though!

Smartie hid when I got him... And now he's such a tart he'd sit on ANYbody's knee!

Really - it's totally normal. *hugs* The fact he came out and sat on your knee is an excellent sign for a first night! *chuffed*

Mango is a better name than lettuce! :)

Smartie and Izzy have both chilled out since Mu/ango left and (because I'm a muppet and forgot to re-open the cat-flap after the prevention of Mungo escapage) even slept the night within range of each other!

Hope your thumb feels better...
