I can't help but think tonight one of the biggest monsters we ever created finally found some rest.
it was an absolute 'show and tell' of what happens when the media takes something lovely and sweet and corrupts it *because it can* because that's it's purpose - to sell - and normality doesn't sell.
we live in a world of constructed reality and false importance because the media says that this is what you should *strive* for and that this is *perfection*. and we fucking let them. every single time you open your mouth and slag off some Hollywood starlet's saggy thighs or laugh about someone famous's divorce meltdown this is what you make. a world where the media can take a nice place and somehow make everyone feel bad about it. cos it sells papers. not because it's actually important.
I feel bad for Michael Jackson, I really do - I remember when he was just a young bloke making some music. I'm not sure quite how we made him and so many other famous people feel the need to be quite so grotesque in the persuit of normality.

gah I'm so going to read this in the morning and cringe - now I know how [livejournal.com profile] deathboy feels :P

edit:
it was seeing this on [livejournal.com profile] bitbat's journal that set me off last night. I don't think that Michael Jackson died last night...

No need to cringe in the morning - you are making a very good point.

Couldn't agree more.

I enjoy every moment I don't buy papers, watch TV and when someone mentions someone apparently famous I've never heard of and how they're on some diet.

He was a child prodigy....A young kid with a good voice in the Jackson 5 that went on to becomming one of the best selling artists of all times. He did remarkably well and the media loves a rags through to riches story, but then gets jealous and wants to drag it down again in flames.

It's pleasantly refreshing to hear someone actually make sense and tell it like it is for a change. It's a horribly sick and twisted world that we live in, I've thought of him as a very unfortunate victim for years. But it is good to hear that a few of us still see through it (especially when it's so well put).

The only thing that I'd add to that is that I believe that he was already fucked before the media got hold of him. They might have made him into the size and shape of monster he was, but they didn't plant the seed. Poor sod didn't stand a chance, at least he is finally at peace now.

Pushed far too young into fame... It's bound to mess with some peoples brains!

I'd have thought it would mess with anybody's head. Regular beatings from his father wouldn't help either (I hear that Adolf Hitler was subjected to this as well).

Tbh the Media has a fuckload to answer for. This is mainly why I shudder when I hear ' has put weight on'.

All I want to say to them is leave them the fuck alone, they are just normal people like you and I, you're putting more fucking stress on them than anyone can take. Why the hell do you think they go wappy.

Another good example is Britney Spears, christ she's being driven mad by the media.

I turn my back on it, bite my thumb and stick two fingers up at the media. If you have to report something make sure it's proper news rather than something about a fucking celebrity and reporting it as news.

I'm stopping there. Else I'll explode.

x-posting this to my journal tho.

I also came here via [livejournal.com profile] asw909. Couldn't agree with you more.

What made me feel sick this morning was the BBC breakfast news, where there was what seemed to me a quite unhealthy interest in his autopsy. They seemed pretty keen to see what was going on inside Jackson's body. It was pretty damn grotesque to watch.

I happen to think we get the media we deserve. It's not 'them' doing it, we are all part of it and I don't think we should be absolved of responsibility.

I was playing WoW last night when the news broke, and immediately the sick and twisted jokes started. The rumour-mongers are going to have a field day with this. At least he wasn't found bound in a wardrobe. That we know of...

I agree too.

It's a terrible shame that someone with so much talent died so soon without seeming to have enjoyed what could have been a great life.

He was a fucking fab choreographer and it would have been ace if he'd been able to handle the awful pressures and given the finger to the media and had a nice happy ending doing what he was best at.

Life is too fucking short to worry about the size of ones arse or what one looks like at certain angles.

Anyone fancy a pint?
