so my computer went *phut* last night*. it's been playing up more and more over the last month or so, so it wasn't a great surprise but nethertheless I felt a bit lost once I'd spent an hour or so fiddling with it and realised it was most likely the motherboard that had gone. I suppose it was 3 years old. So I've taken the opportunity to upgrade the processor a bit. I've stuck with the AMD underdog even though they're probably not the best performance to money ratio but I was very annoyed when I read the report about intel's anti-competetive practices so I thought I'd deny them my money this time. plus it sounds like the memory I have is optimised for AMDs

have gone for an AMD Phenom X3 8650 - a 2.4Ghz triple core processor - should be a bit faster than my old AMD 64 3500 2.2Ghz - and an ASUS mobo - as the brains in the office say they're better with GeForce graphics cards like I have.

whole lot came to £130 inc a tenner for next day delivery - hey ho - should mean I get a better framerate on WoW :)

I really felt lost without it! I went to bed at 11:30!
Good job Red is round tonight :P

* Just before I went to Taekwondo. I won 3 sparring matches in a row after that which is unusual for me - I'll put it down to my mobo-related aggression

3 years old ?
My desktop is about 5 years old !!! Hasn't died (though had to replace the original psu in the case which being an antec should have been better quality). Can't think of a good reason to upgrade and suspect that multi core processors means a number of cores doing nothing while single thread programs run on the others.
Have laptop with dual core 64 and WIndows 7 on pre order at £44 (now only £69 er wow)

I know what you mean about feeling lost without it. You should have seen my face when Paul said we might not have internet access at home for the whole time we're in temporary accommodation!!!! I'd only have access while at work 3.5 days a week, that seemed bad enough, what on earth would I do for the other 3.5 and OMG, what would I do when on maternity leave?! I'd feel so cut off! Someone at work said "you could always go back to writing letters." I said "that's not instant enough!"

yeah, we decided that was probably the way to go.

Don't you think dongle is a funny word? Who thought that up?!

yeah - makes me titter - it was probably that or 'ouijimaflip' they had to chose between.

Wait.

I built that fucker...

indeed you did :)

this new motherboard is a bit better laid out - my giant newish graphics card was blocking all the other pci slots on the old one - this one has a nice gap meaning I should be able to use a couple of the others should I want to :)

am taking strange joy from reading the motherboard manual - these things are getting well wazzy!

oh good, I've been trying to level Gnostrodamus whilst watching the tumble weed blowing through guild chat.

Frame rate? Whats wrong with 7fps on a good day!

Will be back on a bit more once I have levelled my iccle mage to 35 (only a day or so by my current rate)

I'm now getting between 43 and 96fps :D

[identity profile] sarah-orange.livejournal.com 2009-07-30 09:02 am (UTC)(link)
7!!!!! I normally get about 50-65 on the old setup
