as usual watching the olympic taekwondo footage leaves me feeling annoyed. please don't take it as a representation of the sport generally. grrr!

Um... were they really offensive or something? What did they do that was bad? I'm curious now.

gamesmanship - it's scrappy and frankly bordering on cheaty at times - bronze final 68kg mens - the turkish guy is 2 points up so with 7 seconds to go he starts sprinting away from his opponent so the guy can't even the score. ref stops it and gives him a half point penalty so it starts again with 2 seconds to go and he just RAN straight out of the ring and started celebrating. his opponent could have scored up to 3 points with a head kick and could certainly have got one in the last 7 or even 2 seconds.

plus most of the time there's no fighting - they just won't engage and the refs keep penalising them so you get about 2.9 minutes of gentle bouncing and 0.1 minute of fighting per round apart from the last 20 seconds.

bah - I've seen more enjoyable and technically fights at our association's competitions

The gentle bouncing sounds nice.

So essentially, they're just not fighty enough?

They're just fiddling when they should be medalling?

there's no exchange, hardly any decent counterkicking - they're so afraid of conceding one point that nothing occurs. it's way too cagey. that said the gold/silver 68kg seems much better.

I would like 68kg of gold and/or silver.

CHEATY GIRL!

I say they make them do it on a moving platform above a swirling muti-coloured vortex - Flash Gordon style.

Spikes come out of the floor and whips get chucked in if they still refuse to fight.

Fat beardy guy with cardboard wings and a booming voice needed to shout the scores as well.

So....could you do better and if so, why arn't you....I'd support an orange !

[identity profile] sarah-orange.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:01 pm (UTC)(link)
no I couldn't at all but I suspect some of our associations top players could - but there's some murky political stuff about the british olympic team selection. typical eh?

[identity profile] ulfilias.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 02:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You mean you weren't organising them....So how did they manage to avoid being Orange'd ???

[identity profile] warlockdreams.livejournal.com 2008-08-21 05:39 pm (UTC)(link)
What was wrong with it?

[identity profile] mister-jack.livejournal.com 2008-08-24 10:40 am (UTC)(link)
Hey, you're the only sport where one of your competitors kicked the ref in the face; it's not all bad.
